The Altoona Curve were founded in 1999 as an expansion team in the AA Eastern League.
The Curve name is in reference to Horseshoe Curve, a National Historic Landmark which boasts the "best train watching in America"; the name is derived from the U-turn-type curve trains make while passing through the mountainous region.
The Curve name ties the team with the rich history of Altoona, PA as a railroad town; the team is very closely connected with the history of the region.

The Curve was used to raise trains to a sufficient altitude to cross the Allegheny Ridge to the west, beyond which was the steel town of Pittsburgh and the rest of the western United States.
The Horseshoe Curve, because of it being the industrial link to the western U.S., was a primary target of eight Nazi saboteurs who infiltrated the United States early in the war (1942) by being dropped off by Kriegsmarine U-Boats.
Altoona is also one of the dual seats of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown as the location of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, which was made a cathedral and rechristened from St. John's Church in 1851.

The Pirates and Altoona proper should be proud of this grade A facility.
The outfield is a masterpeice, with "Altoona Curve" on a hill in left field, a beautiful scoreboard in center and roller coaster of a nerby amusement park in right field.

The 220 degree arc that forms Horseshoe Curve comprises two curves; the north side has a radius of 637 feet while the south side tightens to 609 feet.

There's an interesting article in today's Altoona Mirror about how our local Double A baseball team, the Altoona Curve, nearly lost its radio presence this past year.
In the Altoona, Johnstown, and State College areas, Forever owns at least 19 AM and FM stations.
The interesting part of this though is that Forever Broadcasting has told DJs of each of its affiliate stations explicitly that they may not even mention the Altoona Curve other than reporting the score of the previous day's game or briefly answering a question from a caller.
