Altoona is served by a career fire department of 65 personnel, the largest career department between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, PA.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, its population approximately 2,000 in '54, 10,000 in '70, and 20,000 in '80.
Altoona is also one of the dual seats of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown as the location of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, which was made a cathedral and rechristened from St. John's Church in 1851.

Altoona was the pride of Pennsylvania when the opening ceremonies were held on Labor Day, Sept. 4, 1923.
Finally in 1931 the owners threw in the towel and Altoona was closed after a series of 100 mile races were financial flops.
Altoona stood splintered and rotting until May 19, 1936 when fire turned the once pride of Pennsylvania into a charred shell.

 Railroaders Memorial Museum Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark Altoona Pennsylvania
In 1985, the City of Altoona, Conrail, and the Railroaders’ Memorial Museum made arrangements to move the locomotive from the Horseshoe Curve to the Museum.
In May 1987, Altoona City and Conrail named the steam locomotive the “Spirit of Altoona.” Governor Robert Casey signed a bill proclaiming the K-4 to be Altoona Pennsylvania’s State Steam Locomotive in March of 1988.
Altoona's K-4 locomotive #1361 is one of two K-4 types still in existence.

Due to the availability of street car service, the city of Altoona was able to establish and enlarge the residential areas around Logan Boulevard, Mansion Park, and Plank Road.
In December of 1956, the Altoona and Logan Valley Electric Railway announced that it had filed with the Public Utilities Commission to terminate bus service and cease operation on March 31, 1957 due to ongoing operating losses.
From 1958 through 1977 the authority was generally known as the Altoona and Logan Valley Bus Authority.

Undoubtedly many Altoona people will be able to recall fond memories of riding the open park cars to and from Lakemont Park.
The cars ran Altoona's main routes for about nine years, then were relegated to tripper and PRR shop line work during the 1930s (five new cars were delivered to Logan Valley in 1929).
The road was named Logan Boulevard; a 4 lane "boulevard" from 6th Avenue within Altoona City limits to Hollidaysburg borough, the county seat, with a curbed grass median.

Most hotels in the Altoona area were sold out for the weekend, and people came in from as far away California for the event.
This unit is one of 45 such units that were constructed by CR shop forces at Altoona using parts supplied by EMD, continuing a tradition of locomotive construction begun by the Pennsylvania Railroad over a hundred years ago.
The next Altoona Railfest is scheduled for 1997 (it seems that the event is simply too big to run on a yearly basis), and it is hoped that the CR E-units will be available to pull excursion trains.
