Altria Group, Inc. (NYSE: MO) (previously named Philip Morris Companies Inc.), based in New York City, is one of the world's largest food, beverage, and tobacco corporations and a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and SandP 500.
Though Altria's headquarters are still in New York, in 2004 its Philip Morris USA division completed a move of its 682 New York based employees to Richmond, Virginia to consolidate operations and achieve cost savings for shareholders.
Many activists criticize Altria group simply for being in the business of selling cigarettes, since smoking is linked to a variety of serious illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, emphysema, and lung and other human cancers.
