		Alum is a double sulphate of aluminium sulphate with either potassium or ammonium sulphate.
		In this country alum has to be processed from shales or clay that contain pyritiferous material.
		It seems the most likely layer from which alum was produced is the lower (far right) of the three areas where, in the darker grey clay, pyrites and carbonaceous matter are evident.

		When a road connecting Totland Bay, Colwell and Yarmouth opened in 1873, the popularity of Totland Bay increased, and by 1879 plans to build a pier in the bay were considered.
		Totland Bay, and the pier itself, started to suffer from coastal erosion by the beginning of the 20th Century, and the shore end of the pier had to be extended in 1916 to reach the new shore-line.

		In the Isle of Wight the lower division is well exposed at Alum Bay (660 ft.) and White Cliff Bay (140 ft.); here it consists of unfossiliferous sands (white, yellow, brown, crimson and every intermediate shade), and clays with layers of lignite and ferruginous sandstone.
		Alum was formerly obtained from the clays of Alum Bay; and the lignites have been used as fuel near Corfe and at Bovey.
		In Surrey and Berkshire the Bracklesham beds are from 20 to 50 ft. thick; in Alum Bay they are 100 ft., with beds of lignite in the lower portion; and about here they are sharply marked off from the Barton clay by a bed of conglomerate formed of flint pebbles.
