By the 1960s, the park attracted so many visitors from the rapidly growing Santa Clara Valley that its facilities became overburdened and the natural scenery was damaged.

Alum Rock Park already boasted a rustic hotel and the health benefits of the mineral springs were well-known when the California Legislature cleared the title to the land and deeded it to the City of San Jose in 1872.
Curiously, the histories of this era of Alum Rock Park are free of references to swimming accidents except for a brief mention of a little girl who lost the sight of one eye when some unidentified particles flew into her eye while she was negotiating the so-called death defying slide.

In the second shot is Alum Rock, named after the element of aluminum, which it is rumored to contain.
Alum is a sulfate in which a trivalent metal (aluminum, chromium, or iron) combines with a univalent metal like potassium or sodium, so it doesn't necessarily contain any aluminum, but that's what I recall reading about it.

Eagle Rock is very short climb on a fire road the never levels until the top.
For people who ride to the trails,climb Alum Rock ave to the closed entrance.2nd route would be Penintencia Creek road to the back entrance.

Not a bad climb up to eagle rock, but be selective in the times that you go.
My last trip there, I came across a couple of "thuggish" lookin fellas who were standing on the trail tossing rocks off the edge trying to hit some other thuggish lookin fellas in the picnic area.
