Alouette's spokesman declined to comment on the role that Alcan Inc. played in the bid other than saying it was "significant." The Canadian producer announced last week it will buy the 20-percent stake in the smelter currently owned by state investment company Societe Generale de Financement de Quebec (SGF) for $165 million.

 Alcoa: Environment: Continuing to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
January 31, 2002 The Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) and its member companies –Alcan Inc., Alcoa Ltd. and Aluminerie Alouette Inc.–today signed a framework agreement with the Quebec government aiming to reduce, on a voluntary basis, greenhouse gas emissions from their Quebec-based facilities by approximately 200,000 tonnes by the end of 2007.
