Aluminum nitride power having improved water-resistance - Patent 4923689
The aluminium nitride powder is generally prepared according to a direct nitriding method in which aluminium is heated in nitrogen or an alumina reducing method in which a mixture of alumina and carbon is heated in nitrogen.
For treating the aluminium nitride powder to improve its water-resistance for obtaining the desired aluminium nitride powder of the present invention, the aluminium nitride powder is firstly dispersed in a suitable solvent.
Alternatively, it is possible to improve the water-resistance for obtaining the desired aluminium nitride powder of the present invention by dry- or wet-type milling the aluminium nitride powder in the presence of the inorganic or organic phosphoric acid compound at room temperature.

 Brevier Technical Ceramics
Because the thermal expansion of aluminium nitride is similar to that of silicon, mechanical stresses created between these two materials under conditions of thermal stresses remain particularly small.
Aluminium nitride ceramic is therefore used as a substrate for semiconductors, as well as for high-power electronic parts, housings and heat sinks.
Aluminium nitride ceramics are less suitable for applications at temperatures above 1,000°C in environments containing water or oxygen, or under mechanical stress when simultaneously wetted by water.

Microstructural design with aluminium nitride ceramics for efficient heat exchangers in micro electronics
Aluminium nitride ceramics are excellently suitable for this purpose because of their high thermal conductivity around 180 W/mK.
The thermal resistance of aluminium nitride (AlN) substrates could be further diminished, if their thickness would be reduced. For that, the fracture strength of the ceramics has to be increased from nowadays 400 MPa (4 point bending strength) to values above 500 MPa.
The aluminium nitride ceramics are developed in a joint project by the Fraunhofer ISC, CeramTec AG, Marktredwitz, and ANCeram GmbH, Bindlach.

Process for producing electric connecting means, in particular interconnection substrates for hybrid circuits - Patent ...
The manufacture of thick copper layers on aluminium nitride presents further difficulties owing to the non-oxide character of this ceramic, which appears to be the cause of a low wetability of the aluminium nitride by the metals.
Their results show that, with respect to all the tested substrates, the initial adhesions and the adhesions after aging measured in the case of an aluminium nitride substrate are about 50% weaker than the corresponding values obtained with respect to an alumina substrate.
The firing of the thick copper layers on these preoxidized aluminium nitride supports is then effected in an inert atmosphere comprising, in the region of the polymer resin eliminating zone, an oxygen content lower than 250 ppm.

Synthesis of nanowires and nanoparticles of cubic aluminium nitride
Nanostructures of cubic aluminium nitride were synthesized by DC arc-plasma-induced melting of aluminium in a nitrogen–argon ambient.
The material flux ejected from the molten aluminium surface was found to react with nitrogen under highly non-equilibrium conditions and subsequently condense on a water-cooled surface to yield a mixture of nanowires and nanoparticles of crystalline cubic aluminium nitride.
From these analyses cubic aluminium nitride was found to be the dominating phase for both nanowires and nanoparticles synthesized at low currents.

An analysis is made of the heating and melting of the surfaces of ceramic samples of aluminium nitride, silicon nitride, and boron nitride by low-intensity laser radiation.
It is shown that the thickness of a molten surface layer is governed by the thermophysical properties of the material and by the relationship between its melting point and the intense-evaporation temperature.
The derived dependence of the thickness of the molten layer on the radiation intensity is compared with the results of experiments on melting of aluminium nitride.

METHOD OF MANUFACTURING ALUMINIUM NITRIDE CRYSTALS FOR SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES (US3634149)
A method of forming aluminum nitride single crystals of large area and silicon carbide-aluminum nitride heterojunctions using a modified Lely method.
Aluminum nitride is introduced, as a vapor phase, into a furnace containing a plate-shaped monocrystal of silicon carbide at a temperature between 1800° and 2300° C. At those temperatures, aluminum nitride recrystallizes and condenses to deposit epitaxially on the silicon carbide.
If the silicon carbide is of one conductivity type, the aluminum nitride can be suitably doped to be of the opposite conductivity type whereby a heterojunction is formed.
