Alun Lewis was born on 1 July 1915 at Aberdare and grew up in the small village of Cwmaman in a depressed mining valley of South Wales, the eldest of four.
In his fourth week at Nira, Lewis broke his jaw during a football match and was sent to the military hospital at Poona for an operation and a month's recuperation (complicated when he contracted dysentery).
Lewis was ordered to the Goppa Pass in the Mayu Range, where his company occupied a defensive position 1,000 feet up in the jungle-covered mountains.

Alun Lewis : So really, when I called it an electronic geologist,it's much brighter than the electronic geologist, because we all know that scientists take one look and they say "That's interesting" and go straight for it,and they probably fall down a crevasse, but here you've got a much cleverer device, which is saying "I'll approach with caution".

Lewis was a fairly major Welsh poet and short story writer (he wrote in English) of the 30s and 40s before he died suddenly in Burma at the age of 29.
Despite the fact that he doesn't look much like Lewis and his original Welsh accent was a different one from Lewis', Wingfield has a very good voice, particularly for reading poetry.
Lewis may or may not have been manic depressive (as his biographer says he was).

Alun Lewis, a Senior Lecturer in Science Communication at Royal Holloway, University of London, is presenting "Have we got the science communication model wrong?" which addresses issues of improving public understanding of science and the need for more effective communication from scientists in order to achieve this.
When under-graduates are introduced to the principles and techniques of science, they should also be experimenting with effective communication techniques and, on graduation, be as comfortable with the technology of film, radio, image manipulation and the written word as they are with a hammer, microscope, spectrometer and computer.
Lewis concludes: "If we unlock the creative side of the next generation of scientists now, and give them the opportunity to experiment with the vibrant ideas entombed in their subject through different media, they will naturally be driven to find an audience and fire them with enthusiasm".

CREW Annotated Bibliography of the Anglo-Welsh Short Story
Later Alun Richards comments on the slightly forced `Welshness` of some of the Anglo-Welsh writers, and says that though this may be partly due to `the seductive pressure of those who like to see their Welshmen as clowns or characters`, we also weave our own myths and need little encouragement to play the clown.
In his brief introduction Alun Richards suggests that all the stories show `a concern for a particular landscape or community`; he also mentions involvement in that community - `awareness of others` - which he suggests is because `so many of us have lived in such crowded places`.
He adds that many of those writing in English got their first encouragement in England, and quotes Alun Lewis as an example - he feels that those of Lewis`s stories that have an English setting are better observed.

By the time of World War II the role of 'war poet' was so well-established in the public mind that 'where are the war poets?' became a topic of discussion.
Alun Lewis and Keith Douglas are the standard critical choices amongst British war poets of that time, and Karl Shapiro made a reputation based on poetry written during the Pacific war; there was probably more heavyweight poetry written in French from 1939-1945, than in English.
The reason may be to do with the onward march of technology and the fact that soldiers spent less of their time sitting in trenches waiting for something to happen.
