Guardian Unlimited Books | Obituaries | Obituary: Alun Richards
In his evocative memoir Days Of Absence (1986), the writer Alun Richards, who has died of a heart attack aged 74, referred to his deep dislike of "the exclusivity of the immensely unattractive world of men".
Richards was born in the market and mining town of Pontypridd, at the foot of the Rhondda valleys, at the start of a decade of depression in Wales.
Psychologically, his growing-up was less straightforward: his father abandoned his mother three days after Richards' birth, and never returned; close relatives and older schoolfriends were killed in the war; and his own academic career, shaky at best, took him into teacher training and naval service as an instructor lieutenant.

CREW Welsh Writers Online: Alun Richards
ALUN RICHARDS (1929—), short-story writer, novelist and playwright, was born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, and educated at the Monmouthshire Training College, Caerleon, and the University College of Swansea.
It may be that Richards does not wholly avoid his own stereotyping and some might argue that he lacks the linguistic resources of the first-rank writer.
But what is certain is that in these three volumes of fiction from the 1970s, and in his fascinating account of his upbringing in English-speaking Pontypridd, he raises questions about the complex plurality of modern Wales which continue to command serious attention.
