Los duendes or Maya Alux are the watchmen of the corn fields.
They protect the fields from intruders from the time the corn is planted thru harvest including during the final burning of the plantation when the farmer cleans the field in order to prepare it for the next year.
The Alux is described as a little man with very playful and mischievous characteristics with no intention to harm.

Alux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An alux (Mayan: [ä lōōsh’], plural: aluxob: [ä lōōsh’ə]) is the name given to a type of sprite or spirit in the mythological tradition of certain Maya peoples from the Yucatán Peninsula.
Some contemporary Maya even consider the single- and double-story shrines that dot the countryside to be kahtal alux, the “houses of the alux” (although their true origins and purpose are unknown).
However, the Maya themselves would claim that the alux are the spirits of their ancestors, or the spirits of the land itself, preceding contact with Western civilization.
