Not only is the theater presenting Thomas Gibbons' Bee-luther-hatchee and the world premiere of Alva Rogers' the doll plays in repertory, but Actor's Express urges the audience to find common ground between the two plays, to consider how one might inform the other.
Alva Rogers wrote the doll plays to pay tribute to a real woman named Lenon Hoyte, aka "Aunt Len" (Mitchell-Leon), who devoted her life to collecting thousands of rare dolls and maintaining a Harlem doll museum.
Aunt Len and the personalities in the plays seem dedicated to the same kind of work as the authors of the plays, making the audience uniquely conscious of the texts and their presentation.

The month of January is named for Janus, the Roman God known for having faces on either side of his head (sort of like the villain at the end of Harry Potter).
At the dawn of 2002, several Atlanta theaters, perhaps in the twin-visaged spirit of Janus, will be staging more shows than one, although they have different reasons for doubling up.
The month's most intriguing project is Actor's Express' world premiere of Alva Rogers' the doll plays, a poetic meditation on the life of a beloved Harlem doll collector, staged in repertory with Thomas Gibbons' Bee-luther-hatchee, a provocative tale set in the publishing world, about a mysterious manuscript set in the segregationist South.

Nana, the 88-year-old Peazant matriarch, treasures her link to the "old souls"; her daughter, Yellow Mary, returned from Cuba with an exquisite but silent female lover, finds herself at odds with much of the family.
Nana's pregnant granddaughter Eula, brilliantly interpreted by Alva Rogers, may be carrying the child of the white landowner who raped her.
It is up to Nana, the ancestral fathers and the spirit of the unborn child to convince Eula's husband that he is the child's true father.

Mimosa 21, pages 17-24. "The Literature of Fandom" by Mike Resnick
A lovely, nostalgic book, one that demonstrates exactly what fannish enthusiasm is all about, is A Requiem for Astounding, by Alva Rogers, an issue-by-issue study of the golden days of John Campbell's Astounding, in which Rogers' less-than-scintillating prose is more than compensated for by his boundless enthusiasm.
It was published in 1964 by Advent, which tried to recapture the magic in 1986 with Galaxy: The Dark and Light Years, by David L. Rosheim, but while Galaxy was a fine magazine, in ways even better than Campbell's, the book is a failure.
Far from being the adulatory fan that Rogers was, Rosheim didn't even read Galaxy during Horace Gold's editorship; and since he can't capture the sense of enthusiasm Rogers imparts, what remains is a simple recounting of the stories -- which has been done better by many other writers and critics.
