  Aalto: Bio
Aalto's experience in planning originated early with such industrial commissions as the Sunila cellulose factory (1936-39, extended 1951-54), which included workers' housing and was a triumph of comprehensive planning.
Aalto, whose work exemplifies the best of 20th-century Scandinavian architecture, was one of the first to depart from the stiffly geometric designs common to the early period of the modern movement and to stress informality and personal expression.
Aalto's preliminary plans were freely sketched, without the use of T-square and triangle, so that the unfettered creative urge for inventive shapes and irregular forms was allowed full play before functional relationships and details were resolved.

The Aalto wave assumed magisterial form in the three-storey suspended wall billowing through 1939 the Finnish Pavilion at the New York World's Fair, where its relationship to the native landscape was made abundantly clear by large aerial views of lake-and-island scenery.
Throughout his career, Aalto was presented internationally as the 'humaniser' and 'naturaliser' of a cold, overly rational modern architecture, and the radical implications of his painterly approach to architectural form went largely unremarked.
Aalto's reputation as one of the great architects of the twentieth century is secure, and his legacy for the twenty-first could hardly be more pertinent.
