Albariño - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Albariño ("ahl-bar-EEN-yoh" – Galician) or Alvarinho ("ahl-vah-REE-nyoh" – Portuguese) is a variety of white wine grape grown in Galicia (northwest Spain) and northern Portugal, where it is used to make varietal white wines.
In Portugal it is known as Alvarinho, and sometimes as Cainho Branco.
It should not be confused with the Alvarinho Liláz grape of Madeira.

The one exception is the wines are made from 100% Alvarinho, the noble grape varietal in the region.
This clear, medium straw-colored Alvarinho is most unusual due to its rather herbal, grassy and complex nose.
Luscious is the best word to describe this Alvarinho - full bodied, with a complex and intense nose of exotic and tropical fruits (lichee, green apples and honeysuckle) which are also reflected on the palate, leading a long, delicious finish.

Wine of the Week, 4/25/05: 2002 Dorado Portugal Vinho Verde / Alvarinho Superior $20.99
White wine lovers the world over have recently discovered that Spanish wines based on the Albariño grape are a magical combination with all manner of seafood (steamed, grilled or flened fish, oysters, clams and shellfish).
To produce Dorado's 2002 Alvarinho Superior, the winemaking methods employed by Dorado and Abal are similar to those utilized by the best white Burgundy growers from the Mâconnais or Chablis regions rather than the Cote d’Or, since no oak is used for aging.
Dorado was granted a new appellation "Alvarinho Superior" though the official Region is Vinho Verde.

Alvarinho is also known as Albarino in Spain.
In Spain it produces the popular white wine of the Rias Baixas region, where the style is pungent and citrusy with a lively yet pillowy acidity.
As for ageing potential of Alvarinho, the key here is to drink it young and fresh.

Made from Alvarinho grapes in a region close to the sea it is no coincidence that this excellent, fresh white reflects the local cuisine so well.
With its peachy edge, an ethereal essence of jasmine (characteristic of Alvarinho, but often lacking in wines made from it) and vibrant steely acidity it is just about the perfect partner for seafood and fish, so get some langoustines under the grill and enjoy pure wine and food heaven.

My experience with Albarino and Alvarinho is more limited than I would like, but I would venture to say that the difference between the Spanish and Portuguese products is somewhat like the difference between Riesling as made in Germany and Alsace.
They tasted remarkably alike, though the Alvarinho was very slightly more perfumed and the Albarino had a touch more weight.

There are eight sub-regions, and one of the most prized wines is from the Moncao, renowned for its Alvarinho, which seems to be higher in alcohol and more fruity than other Vinhos Verdes.
The soil, climate, and grape varieties contribute to the wines' acidity, and it would appear that one of the winemakers' objectives is to encourage a secondary malolactic fermentation in the bottle, which gives these wines their bite and slight fizz.

The Vinhos Verdes Region is situated in the northwest of Portugal.
We found out that the global characteristics of the grapes from the two varieties depend on the harvest factor (climate) rather than on the sub-region where the vine is planted.
The characteristics of the soil have an even lesser influence on the variableness of the samples, although the Alvarinho variety picked in the Lima sub-region seems to have different characteristics.
