  Alvaro Siza
Siza, whose full name is Alvaro Joaquim de Meio Siza Vieira, was born on June 25, 1933 in the small coastal town of Matosinhos in the mountainous north of Portugal, a country where it is said that every summit has the Atlantic Ocean as the horizon.
The architecture of Alvaro Siza is a joy to the senses and uplifts the spirit.
Siza is a teacher, not only at the university where he obtained his education, but also as a guest lecturer throughout the world, fanning the intense interest his designs generate, particularly in the younger generation.

Siza Vieira has contacted the heads of the Metropolitan to find out "what steps are being taken to safeguard the monument".
And in Siza it is conceived as being rooted in expressionism.
This precision of scale is contributed to by the subtle understanding of the surroundings, and the recent project for the Faculty of Architecture in Oporto, in which he rejects a large-scale solution, is a fine example of this.

Alvaro Siza was born in 1933 and raised in the coastal fishing town of in Matosinhos, Portugal near Porto.
Siza uses a variety of strategies to "attack" this integrity, enabling him to persist in constructing a relationship between site and intervention (as each project should be called in his work) that binds them without naturalizing their relationship.
Siza's architecture emerged from an epoch that sought to recover from the betrayals of language and the misuse of history.

Alvaro Siza - Santa Maria Church :: arcspace.com
The proposed plan by Alvaro Siza, with the church playing a central role, will ensure that the other buildings will be in concordance with the pre-existing scale of the neighbourhood.
The plan of the church is a simple 30 meter long, 16.5 meter wide and 16,5 meter high rectangle with the main entrance at the South West end of the nave and the altar at the other end.
The materials are typical of Siza with the external walls of whitewashed reinforced concrete, internal walls and ceilings of stucco; with tiles or marble where there is running water.

Ceramic Tiles of Italy - Architecture between nature and artifice
Alvaro Siza's works are linked to rationalism by a subtle thread, that of social value and the democratisation of architecture.
At this exhibition of four projects presented by Siza himself, we can gain an appreciation of the architect's profound respect for geographical location, which he implements with concrete constructions free of excessive abstractions or flights of fancy, and in which we can recognise a deep love of materials, including ceramic.
The meeting with Alvaro Siza, one of the great masters of world architecture, further underlines the role of Markitecture and Cersaie as key appointments with the world of design and building.

The same goes for the apartment building that Siza designed in the Kreuzberg neighbourhood in Berlin where a typical gloomy tenement block has been turned into a once-off statement by the foreign 'author' and is imbued with his charisma.
No matter what the project, Siza concentrates both on ensuring that the paradoxes inherent in the commission are given free play, while at the same time highlighting the frozen semblance of a consensus based on the local conventions he is confronted with.
Siza himself will in any case not be of much help, concerned as he is with seeing that fine craftsmanship gets maximum play.

Above all, for Alvaro Siza, coming from northern Portugal- stony, clear, poor and full of intimacy, where the light of the Atlantic is long and illuminates poverty in an abstract way, reveals all the harshness of surfaces, each change in the road around homes, every scrap, in a grandiose, dry and bittersweet manner.
Alvaro Siza says his sketches start when he first visits a city where he has a commission.
Siza is best known for his renovation of the Campo di Marte in Venice, rebuilding Lisbon's Chiado quarter after fire, creating the museum in Santiago de Compostela and for his winning entry for Berlin's Schlesisches Tor apartment building.

A great architect and his relationship with the subject of the city: this is the theme of the retrospective, the biggest ever held in the architect's native land, with which Oporto pays homage to Alvaro Siza Vieira, head of the minimalist school of modern architecture which has made an indelible mark on contemporary architecture.
A master experienced in projects of all scales, from design to urban planning, revitalisation and interior design, Siza approaches the city by returning to its relationship with context, which determines, for instance, the use of materials, without allowing adhesion to the genius loci penalise his limpid modern conception of space.
Plans for projects never executed are on display, and the fascinating exhibition catalogue includes 64 sketches to the original scale demonstrating the architect's curiosity and fascination for the cities he knew.

Built in the grounds of the Quinta de Serralves (a quinta is a country house surrounded by its grounds), the museum is completely separate from the grand pink 1930s villa which served for some years as the exhibition building.
As usual with much of Siza's latest work, the exterior is modestly and finely honed, with precise white cubical forms on a stone plinth: a similar strategy, abstracted from tradition, to the one he adopted in the church at Marco de Canaves (AR August 1998, p60).
Though the site falls some 9m from north to south along the length of the building, the museum has one essential roof-line, so the building is a good deal higher at the southern end, where it bifurcates to offer a green court to the sun and the rest of the park.
