 ALAN NICHOLLS HOMEPAGE
Alveley parish is in the English county of Shropshire and consists of four ancient townships, those of Alveley, Romsley, Kingsnordley and Astley and as I said before it is characterised by an undulating landscape dissected by streams in deep cuttings which mostly lead down to the river Severn.
As the terrain is irregular it seems that in ancient times the common field land lay in a variety of enclosures with one or more larger open fields of the classic type consisting of furlongs subdivided by strips or selions.
Many of the parish field names are interesting and, apart from the common ones that refer to the shape or type of land or to their owners, there are some very imaginative and also ancient names.
