II. Osteology. 5b. 2. The Maxillæ (Upper Jaw). Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
Projecting into the floor of the antrum are several conical processes, corresponding to the roots of the first and second molar teeth; 38 in some cases the floor is perforated by the fangs of the teeth.
On the under surface of the palatine process, a delicate linear suture, well seen in young skulls, may sometimes be noticed extending lateralward and forward on either side from the incisive foramen to the interval between the lateral incisor and the canine tooth.
The frontal process is well-marked and the body of the bone consists of little more than the alveolar process, the teeth sockets reaching almost to the floor of the orbit.

Maxilla   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
It is separated from the anterior surface by the zygomatic process and by a strong ridge, extending upward from the socket of the first molar tooth.
At the lower part of this surface is a rounded eminence, the maxillary tuberosity, especially prominent after the growth of the wisdom tooth; it is rough on its lateral side for articulation with the pyramidal process of the palatine bone and in some cases articulates with the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid.
On the posterior wall are the alveolar canals, transmitting the posterior superior alveolar vessels and nerves to the molar teeth.

Defects during the development of the face
Factors that are known to increase the probability of having a child with a craniofacial defect are: chronic or binge drinking during pregnancy, the use of antiseizure medication during pregnancy, and smoking during pregnancy.
Such defects are especially deforming because of the loss of continuity of the orbicularis oris muscle, which closes the mouth and purses the lips as in whistling.
The embryological basis of cleft palate is failure of the mesenchymal masses of the lateral palatine processes to meet and fuse with each other, with the nasal septum, and/or with the posterior margin of the median palatine process, or primary palate.

 Protein synthesis in pancreatomizad rats
(1970) observed histologically that the process of alveolar repair in alloxan diabetic rats is clearly retarded and that insulin administration to the animals leads to a more favorable sequence of healing evolution.
Since it has been well established that insulin acts favorably on the processes of protein synthesis in several tissues (Krahl, 1%2), we undertook the present study to determine whether the delay in alveolar healing reported previously was simply dependent on the activity of protein synthesis.
The activity of protein synthesis in the recently formed alveolar tissue following dental extraction was calculated as the average value obtained from all the incubation tubes, being the estimation done for each 25 mg of tissue for 5W,000 ppm.

eMedicine - Gingivitis : Article Excerpt by: James Stephen, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Background: Gingivitis is an inflammatory process limited to the mucosal epithelial tissue surrounding the cervical portion of the teeth and the alveolar processes.
As this persistent inflammation continues, periodontal ligaments break down and destruction of the local alveolar bone occurs.
ANUG is a completely different syndrome caused by acute infection of the gingiva with organisms such as Prevotella intermedia, alpha-hemolytic streptococci, Actinomyces species, or any of a number of different oral spirochetes.

this is an alveolar pattern in the caudodorsal lung lobe caused by severe edema.

Scott argues that the correlates of alveolar growth are necessary adaptations to support a massive dentition in animals that had already undergone a paedomorphic reduction of the face:
Massive alveolar processes are associated with large cheek teeth, prominent canines, powerful muscles of mastication, a well-developed simian shelf or mandibular torus, and well-developed brow ridges especially in animals with low retreating foreheads.
The superimposed masticatory skeleton which reaches its greatest development in the male gorilla is a functional necessity absent in animals such as the dog and the pig in which the strong tubular snout, extending back between the orbital cavities, provides an adequate skeletal anvil to resist the moving mandible.

A characteristic feature of all these processes is alveolar flooding and collapse from combinations of inflammatory exudates, alveolar/interstitial edema, and loss of surfactant function.
Restoring Alveolar Structure and Function in Parenchymal Lung Injury Positive pressure ventilation (PPV) can be used to restore alveolar patency and function by physically forcing the alveolus open during inspiration (recruitment/dilation) and then preventing its recollapse (derecruitment) during expiration.
However, over the past 15 years, a number of studies using CT scans have taught us that, in fact, the distribution of opacities in the lung is quite heterogeneous with a strong tendency for the dependent regions of the lung to be fluid filled/atelectatic, and the nondependent regions to appear relatively normal.

Palatal & alveolar cysts of newborns
is commonly found in the posterior midline of the hard palate, where it arises from epithelial remnants remaining in the stroma after fusion of the palatal processes which meet medially to form the palate.
The cysts are usually somewhat larger and less numerous than the gingival cysts of the alveolar processes in newborns, but the two entities are otherwise clinically identical.
The cystic lumen is filled with degenerated keratin, usually formed into concentric layers or "onion rings," and the epithelium lacks rete processes.

 Responses to dinosaur-lung claims
On a related issue, Hou et al (1996 Science 274:1164) claim that "uncinate processes hinging on the ribcage are found in all ornithurine birds", and cite Ruben as asserting that the early birds that lack these processes would not be able to ventilate the abdominal air-sacs.
So, both flightless and flying birds do not need to have ossified uncinate processes in order to ventilate their air-sacs, and be endotherms.
It is possible that uncinate processes have more to do with bracing the ribcage than with respiration, the problem is poorly understood.
