Alveolata - Palaeos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Alveolata is a high-order group of Eukarya whose principal members include (a) the Ciliophora (e.g., Paramecium), (b) a large group of revolting parasites called the Apicomplexa or Sporozoa (e.g.
The Alveolata share with their sister clade, Chromista, an interesting flagellar accessory known as the mastigoneme, which is described at the glossary entry.
All of the Alveolata prefer oxygen-rich environments and engage in oxidative metabolism using mitochondria of the usual, tubulocristate kind.

Biology and ecological functioning of Sabellaria alveolata in biogenic reefs
alveolata reefs are not particularly diverse communities, though they do nevertheless provide some increased diversity of habitat, and older reefs have somewhat more diverse associated communities than younger ones.
alveolata, that even algae do not do well where the Sabellaria are in their prime, and that where Sabellaria are dominant other species are suppressed.
alveolata may reduce the diversity of shores by reducing the number of crevices available, but that as the sheets get older and break up the range of habitats provided increases.

Action plan for Sabellaria alveolata reefs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
alveolata has a very variable recruitment and the cover in any one area may vary greatly over a number of years, although in the long term reefs tend mainly to be found on the same shores.
Sabellaria alveolata reefs are at the northern end of their range in Britain and are affected by extremely cold winters, after which they may die back for many years, particularly at higher shore levels.

Sensitivity of Sabellaria alveolata reefs to human activities
alveolata reefs had been reported since 1989 were resurveyed in 1994.
alveolata were, however, common at the turn of the century at Hilbre Island in the mouth of the Dee Estuary, but disappeared for reasons unknown; siltation, cold winters and pollution have all been quoted as possibilities (Craggs, 1982), though there was no apparent justification for the latter.
alveolata appears to be present at lower abundance on that part of the Cumbrian coastline where industrial and sewage effluents are most concentrated (around the Whitehaven - Workington - Maryport area) than elsewhere on the Cumbrian coast, but to some extent this might simply represent a lack of suitable habitat (Hartnoll et al., 1998).

Kent Biodiversity Action Plan - View Priority Habitat
S. alveolata requires a hard substratum (from bedrock to pebbles) on which to build its tube, and suspended sand grains lifted into the water column in strong or moderate wave conditions.
S. alveolata reefs are on the northern extremity of their range in the UK, and are reported to be found only in the south and west coasts, between Lyme Bay and the Solway Firth, with notable reefs in the Severn Estuary and Morecambe Bay.
alveolata reefs are also sub-features of non-reef Annex 1 habitats (eg intertidal mudflats and sandflats) under the Habitats Directive, and are present in certain UK Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), though many reefs lie outside protected areas.

The "honeycombreef worm", Sabellaria alveolata (L.), shows a Lusitanian distribution in the UK where it occurs predominantly in southwestern British waters, extending eastwards as far as the IsleofWight and northwards to the Mull of Galloway (Gubbay, 1988).
alveolata individuals were measured under the binocular microscope as the diameter of the anterior segments/crown, using a curtain micrometer eyepiece (to the nearest 7 µm).
The S. alveolata individuals are neither larger nor more numerous at the outfall site (indeed, significantly less numerous per unit area), they are not of a different species and show no differential recruitment, so none of these can account for the reef size difference.

 Lab 1 :: Protists
Alveolata is composed of three main groups: the dinoflagellates, the apicomplexans, and the ciliates.
They can reproduce both sexually and asexually, which is usually based on what stage they are in during their complex life cycle.
Ciliates are a group of Alveolata distinguished by tiny hair-like cilia, used for locomotion.

For the sake of convenience, we will use the term "protist," but keep in mind that this is not a taxonomic term, rather one that describes a diverse group of mostly single-celled eukaryotes.
They include the dinoflagellates that are involved in such diverse activities as coral reef building and that cause various forms of red tide.
In a hike through the woods, you might encounter a brightly colored, fungus-like structure spreading over the surface of a decaying tree-trunk; most likely, you are observing a slime mold.

The tubes it creates are tightly packed in honeycomb-like masses, forming reefs of 30-50 cm, normally found on the bottom third of the shore.

Alveolate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 2001, direct amplification of the rRNA gene in marine picoplankton samples revealed the presence of two novel alveolate linages, called group I and II Group I has no cultivated relatives, while group II is related to the dinoflagellate parasite Amoebophrya, which is classified until now in the Syndiniales dinoflagellate order.
Relationships between some of these the major groups were suggested during the 1980s, and between all three by Cavalier-Smith, who introduced the formal name Alveolata in 1991
They were confirmed by a genetic study by Gajadhar et al.

Thomas Cavalier-Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of his major contributions to biology was his proposal of a sixth kingdom of life: the Chromista, although the evidence for the existence of the group is still open to debate.
He also proposed that all chromista and alveolata share the same common ancestor, a claim later borne out by studies of morphological and molecular evidence by other labs.
Cavalier-Smith has also published prodigiously on issues such as the origin of various cellular organelles (including the nucleus, mitochondria), genome size evolution, and endosymbiosis.
