Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight
The Reserve is called "Alverstone Mead" after the largest field in the area shown on the 1823 tithe map.
This is the County's seventh Local Nature Reserve, with 18 hectares (44 acres) of ancient woodland, alder carr, hay meadows, wet meadows and ditches.
The Reserve's woods are home to the red squirrel and dormouse and the ditches hold good populations of water vole and some species of dragonfly.

Alverstone Mead was purchased by Wight Nature Fund through public subscription and is one of the few remaining water meadows in England.
Water levels are carefully controlled in the traditional manner so that flooding during the winter allows a chemical-free growth of grass for cattle to graze on in the summer.
The old-hay-meadow plant, Yellowrattle, has appeared on Skinner's Mead which is good news as it is partially parasitic on grass and will therefore help keep the sward low, which in turn should allow a greater variety of plant species to have a chance of flourishing.

This is the County's seventh LNR and gives statutory protection to 18 hectares (44 acres) of ancient woodland, alder carr, hay meadows, wet meadows and ditches.
Alverstone Mead was once part of Lower Borthwood Farm which was leased to the Island-based conservation group, Wight Nature Fund (WNF), in 1994.
This enabled WNF members to progress with the conservation of the site whilst the Council was able to retain a legal interest, allowing statutory protection at a later date.

The distinction between the two cases is clear enough: the reactions of opponents would in either case be unlawful, but while in the first case they were the voluntary acts of people who could not properly be regarded as objects of provocation, in the second the conduct was calculated to provoke violent and disorderly reaction.
The situation perceived and recounted by PC Tennant did not justify him in apprehending a breach of the peace, much less a breach of the peace for which the three women would be responsible.
