Cabinet Magazine Online - Break the Bank (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.isi.jhu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Alves Reis cobbled together a contract that specified that he, as a supposed agent of the Bank of Portugal, was authorized to request the printing of $5,000,000 in Angolan currency to be paid to an "international group of investors" in exchange for a loan to the Angolan government for the same amount in British sterling.
Believing Alves Reis to be the front man for a cabal of corrupt officials out to shore up both their own and Angola's finances, the group vowed complete secrecy as a requisite to participation in the scheme.
Alves Reis knew that these numbers followed a strict set of parameters; for instance, that there were never two consecutive vowels in any given serial number, and so on.

EPISODES OF FINANCIAL FRAUD AND SPECULATION
Reis got the embezzlement charges dismissed and only had to face the charge of fraud in connection with his check kiting operations.
Reis had to share the proceeds of the operation with partners and got only 25 percent after costs, but Reis' "costs" included $850,000 in supposed bribes he was paying the Governor and other officials at the Bank of Portugal.
Reis was finally convicted and sent to prison where he was converted to a fundamentalist protestant sect.

Reis was a child of a humble family - his father was an undertaker, had financial problems and ended up being declared insolvent.
Reis forged himself a diploma of engineering, supposedly from Oxford University, although in reality it was from a school which didn't exist: the "Polytechnic School of Engineering".
Altough Reis was the inventor of the fraud and the forger of all the documents, he received only 25% of the proceeds.

When Reis was invited by the duo of composers Bide/Marçal to chose between two sambas (the other would be Alves'), he asked them to show the sambas to Alves beforehand and he'd keep the other one.
Reis was left with "Agora é Cinza," which became the champion at 1934's Carnaval contest and a big hit.
In 1972, Odeon released the Mário Reis LP also produced by de Oliveira with his old hits and two songs by Chico Buarque, the march "A Banda" and the samba "Bolsa de Amores." This last one was vetoed by the military censorship, but Reis demanded that the track remain blank on the side.

And Reis Felix, in his novel of vignettes, brings the Portuguese to life with wit and humor, and above all, with an eye for telling detail that any American writer—of any ethnicity—should envy.
In his wonderful new novel, the octogenarian writer (and New Bedford native) Charles Reis Felix tells what it was like to be young and proud and poor and Portuguese in the city in 1934, while a quartet of ethnic Americans (including the Yankee incumbent) duke it out in a wild mayoral election.
Charles Reis Felix writes as boldly as if carving scrimshaw about the soles fixed by his father, a cobbler, and the tread of life upon various nearby souls, including his own.

 snarkout: napoleons of crime
Forgers are mostly associated with art (a forged Giacometti or Chagall?) or official documents (a forged signature on loan applications?), but some forgers have aimed higher.
One of these was Alves Reis, who worked his way up from small-change embezzlement to control of a mining company in the Portugese colony of Angola to (after a brief jail term) a forged contract to print Angolan banknotes.
With his seemingly-legitimate contract, Reis was able to bypass the usual problems that trip up counterfeiters (obtaining legitimate plates, inks, and paper; Reis simply left this job to the printers, England's Waterlow and Sons), skip the step of marking the bills as Angolan, and focus his efforts on distributing them in Portugal itself.
