Alvin Batiste is the lead teacher in jazz instrumental music at NOCCA, where he teaches clarinet, jazz composition and directs jazz combos.
Batiste, New Orleans educator, jazz artist and composer, has performed and recorded with a multitude of jazz artists, including John Carter, David Murray and Jimmy Hamilton, as a part of The Clarinet Summit, which has recorded for both India Navigation and Black Saint Records.
Batiste upgraded Institute programs to include the study of linkages of jazz, blues, gospel and diasporan (Cuban, Brazilian, South Louisiana and African) music.

Alvin Batiste, 78, a retired management consultant, accidentally took a handful of his wife's high blood pressure and diabetes medicine instead of his vitamins because he was trying to watch the Florida recount on TV.
Batiste was busy sorting out his vitamins and his wife's prescription medication at the kitchen counter when he made the mistake.
Batiste's call was one of almost 55,000 calls a year, or 150 calls per day, to the OPC.

Born in New Orleans in 1932, Batisté; developed his rich sound by mastering virtually the entire repertoire of clarinet music, from traditional jazz and blues to classical and marching music.
Batisté; is also an educator, teaching at his own Jazz Institute at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

The esteemed gentleman from Black Swan Records and I were just discussing, at the tail end of the Juno thread, how great it would be to get Alvin Batiste up here for a gig.
When I saw Alvin at the IAJE convention in New Orleans in Jan. 2000 he gave me a copy of his latest (Songs, Words and Messages Connections, on South Louisiana Records) with a request that I get it to Coastal Jazz and Blues with an eye to setting something up at a future festival.
It's mixture of Pan-Africanism, New Orleans funk and 20th century classical vocabulary was something I thought would be right up Coastal's alley but for whatever reason I guess they chose not to pursue it.
