Curling, who has been Speaker of the Ontario Legislative Assembly since November 2003, has had to resign that position, in addition to giving up his position as Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the constituency of Scarborough-Rouge River, to which he was first elected in 1985.
Curling said that he was "quite honoured" to be named Canada's highest diplomatic representative to the Dominican Republic and he was looking forward to his new job.
Curling was inducted in the institution's Hall of Fame and awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree last year for his outstanding work as a parliamentarian.

August, 21 - 12:04 PM Alvin Curling named Canada's ambassador to DR TORONTO — Ontario legislature Speaker Alvin Curling resigned his post and his seat Friday after he was named as one of Canada's 10 newest ambassadors in a diplomatic shakeup announced by the federal government.
Curling's time as Speaker wasn't without controversy; he often raised the ire of Conservatives and New Democrats alike with rulings they felt favored the governing Liberals, and also came under fire for attending a Liberal fundraiser in 2004 while Speaker, something he later apologized for in the legislature.
Curling admitted he's never visited the Dominican Republic, but said he has visited Haiti, Cuba and other nearby countries, and didn't leave Jamaica for Canada until he was in his 20s.

YAY he got it right in the very middle, poor alvin, squished between a big, hard, round object, two of them to be exact, and if he was a human, he'd be feeling very lucky if it wasn't in front of a curling rink.

The 2004 Grenada Independence celebrations in Toronto began with a church service on Sunday February 1st and culminated with a gala Dinner and Dance hosted by the Grenada Association at the Spirale Banquet Hall on the evening of Saturday February 7th.
This event attracted a very large audience that included her Excellency Lorraine Williams, High Commissioner for the Countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States; the Honourable Jean Augustine, Minister of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women; the Honourable Alvin Curling, Speaker of the Ontario Legislature and other dignitaries.
The evening began with Drum Theatre Togetherness, a cultural group headed by Renwick Herry, which thrilled the audience and received a standing ovation for its stunning performance that depicted the history of Grenada from pre-colonial times to the present.
