 Plantinga, Proper Basicality, and Fideism
Plantinga begins his essay by describing what he calls the "evidentialist" objection to belief in God, in which it is held that belief in God is only capable of being justified if there is sufficient evidence of the existence of the Divine.
Plantinga here seems to argue for a view of proper basicality that is conditioned by environmental as well as social circumstances, since he subsequently claims that the claims for proper basicality may not, and indeed in the case of theistic claims will not, be accepted.
Plantinga appears to make PB a function of community belief in his claims to be independent of the epistemic norms of the atheistic community, responsible only to the epistemic norms of the Christian community.

Notes on Plantinga's "Free Will Defense"
Plantinga notes that some might find this response to be an unpersuasive, "tricky and irrelevant." There are, however, other examples, but more to the point, Mackie's charge is that the original set A, when subjected to logical examination, is obviously incoherent.
Plantinga suggests that perhaps there are other propositions, which when placed in conjunction with set (A') might yield a formally contradictory set.
Plantinga now attempts to show that there is not a logical inconsistency with set A. To accomplish this, he will need to find a proposition which describes a possible state of affairs, which if it were actual, then all of the members of A would be true.

hell’s handmaiden » Blog Archive » Alvin Plantinga… hmm, never really liked Plantinga
Plantinga suggests that the judge legislated that “the scientific community has successfully refuted the criticism of unguided evolution brought by the IDers” and this is utterly false.
Plantinga believes that “we can easily see that propositions about supernatural beings not being verifiable or falsifiable isn’t true at all.” To this end he argues that “the statement “God has designed 800-pound rabbits that live in Cleveland” is clearly testable, clearly falsifiable and indeed clearly false.” He is wrong.
For evidence of the truth of the second of his two prongs, Plantinga offers the statement that “There is at least one electron” as a statement that is certainly scientific though he claims that it is neither verifiable nor falsifiable, adding that individual statements, as a general rule, are not verifiable or falsifiable.

Plantinga's modal version, however, claims that God is a logically necessary being and then moves from the alleged possibility of God's necessary existence to God's actual necessary existence.
This is due to the pioneering work of Alvin Plantinga (you guessed it), who has shown that it is impossibly difficult to establish any sound proof of God's non-existence using this argument.
In particular, if Plantinga is right, it shifts the burden of proof onto the atheist: if she wants to show that the theist is irrational then she will have to show that the theist has not been designed by God to believe in God.

Plantinga's pause and reflection evidences a need for further investigation into the underlying presuppositions and theories of both thinkers, with the hope that despite apparent language and conceptual gaps, a consensus might be achieved whereby the parts are fulfilled in their participation in the whole.

Alvin Plantinga is arguably the greatest philosopher of the last century.
Plantinga continues by lobbing several well-aimed grenades at what he calls the "Freud-Marx Complaint," the commonly encountered jab at Christianity as mere wish fulfillment, as the projection of a heavenly Father on the blank canvas of the universe.
Plantinga, then, has established the intellectual grounds for Christians to continue to believe in God, and particularly the God of historic orthodoxy, in the face of the two most daunting philosophical challenges of this century.

 Introduction: The Resurrection of Theism
Plantinga's work in the area of religious epistemology is very welcome, for he adroitly manages to steer his ship between the Charybdis of theological rationalism (Plantinga calls it "evidentialism") and the Scylla of fideism in a way that is wholly consonant with biblical teaching.
Granted, Plantinga asserts that the theist in such a predicament may instead abandon belief in one of the argument's premises or in the argument form itself, but the fact remains that if the theist has a greater degree of belief in those premises and argument forms, then it will be theism that must go.
On Plantinga's view, the theistic youngster, however, enjoys the advantage that as he matures intellectually his belief in God may be sustained and reinforced by his being in the sort of circumstances that rationally warrant his believing that God exists.

Evolution News & Views: Philosopher Alvin Plantinga Demolishes Part of Kitzmiller Decision
Plantinga has concerns about a judge attempting to settle disputes by “judicial declaration” or “judicial fiat.” Plantinga then goes on to analyze some of the reasoning Judge Jones used to support his overly-bold claims.
Plantinga first recalls how difficult it has been for philosophers to come up with a decent definition and analysis of falsification or verification (concepts that Judge Jones assumes to be true for his argument).
Plantinga’s article catalogues a number of other proposed constraints on the definition of science; all of which make the point that science being constrained by methodological naturalism (as Jones did in Kitzmiller) is anything but a self-evident truth.

 The Analytic Theist
Plantinga himself, an evangelical Calvinist, has served as President of the American Philosophical Association, and was invited to give the prestigious Gifford Lectures in Scotland in 1987.
Largely as a result of Plantinga’s influence, the Christian philosophers’ earlier beleaguered posture, resulting from their perpetually unsuccessful attempts at trying to meet the skeptic’s insatiable demand for “sufficiently credible” empirical evidence and rational verification for their beliefs, has become a thing of the past.
Instead of agreeing to play according to the rules set by the opposition, Plantinga disputes the rules, claiming that they indefensibly restrict the beliefs that qualify as properly basic, and that belief in God can sometimes be perfectly rational even without being based on an inference or argument.
