Gloucestershire probably originated as a shire in the 10th century, and is mentioned by name in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 1016.
On the subdivision of the Mercian diocese in 680 the greater part of modern Gloucestershire was included in the diocese of Worcester, and shortly after the Conquest constituted the archdeaconry of Gloucester, which in 1290 comprised the deaneries of Campden, Stow, Cirencester, Fairford, Winchcombe, Stonehouse, Hawkesbury, Bitton, Bristol, Dursley and Gloucester.
The Berkeleys have held lands in Gloucestershire from the time of the Domesday Survey, and the families of Basset, Tracy, Clifton, Dennis and Poyntz have figured prominently in the annals of the county.

 Alvington - Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
As with some other places in the Forest, Alvington was originally part of Herefordshire and it only became part of Gloucestershire in the 13th century when it was absorbed into the Bledisloe Hundred and made a separate parish.
At this time, the manor and much of the parish was owned by Llanthony Priory in Gloucester and Alvington Court, a 16th century Elizabethan house that lies east of the village along Court Lane was probably built on the site of an early grange of the Priory.
Alvington is located on the lower slopes of the Severn escarpment, about 5 kilometres south-west of Lydney.

The west Gloucestershire village of Alvington lies close to the River Severn on the A48 approximately six miles north-east of Chepstow.
War Office records (Soldiers Died In The Great War) note that Rifleman Albert Parsloe was born in Alvington, enlisted into the army at Lydney and initially served in the 11th Gloucestershire Regiment.
Some two hundred and forty of which are in a section designated as "Soldiers' Corner." A plot belonging to the Bristol branch of the British Red Cross Society, the graves are in the main those of soldiers who died in War Hospitals at Bristol.
