Manufactured in England under license from Sikorsky, this British version of the S-51 was powered by a 500-horsepower Alvis Leonides engine, and carried three passengers and a pilot.
It had a cruising speed of 120 miles per hour, a maximum range of 310 miles, and could carry a useful load of 1,5250 pounds.
The 48-foot diameter three-blade rotor was powered by a 550-horsepower Alvis Leonides engine.

Westland also sold commercial versions, including the "WS-51 Mark 1A", with an Alvis Leonides 521/1 engine with 390 kW (520 HP), and the WS-51 Mark 1B", which was similar to the Mark 1A but had a Pratt and Whitney R-985-B4 Wasp Junior radial engine with 335 kW (450 HP).
The company also produced a derivative of the R-5 in the mid-1950s known as the "Widgeon", which featured a new automobile-style fuselage with seating for four passengers plus the pilot, an Alvis Leonides 521/1 engine, and the improved rotor of the bigger Sikorsky "S-55" helicopter, to be discussed elsewhere.
A total of 14 Widgeons were built, some of them (including the prototype) being conversions of Dragonflies.

(1) The prototype British construction flew in October that year, powered by a British piston engine, the Alvis Leonides 50, which developed 520hp.
A prime example of this was the slightly thicker gauge metal required as a minimum for UK aircraft production compared to a thinner, lighter type allowed in US designs.
Originally fitted with an under-powered Alvis Leonides piston engine, the Mk.10 was the first British helicopter to have a gas turbine installed.
