Some have suggested that de Freville proposed the name Alvis as a compound of the words "aluminium" and "vis" (meaning 'strong' in Latin), although it is well known that de Freville himself vigously denied this theory.
Alvis was produced and this engine became the basis for the long line of six-cylinder Alvis cars produced up until 1939 before a completely new design which was produced from 1950 to 1967.
In 2002 Alvis group purchased Vickers to form the subsidiary Alvis Vickers Ltd which was subsequently purchased by BAE Systems in 2004.

In 1947 a contract was placed with Alvis Ltd of Coventry to produce two prototypes of the FV601.
The Saladin has permanent 6 wheel drive that is driven by an 8 cylinder Rolls Royce petrol engine placed at the rear.
Saladins are equiped with a 76mm main gun and a 0.30in machine gun in the turret, with another 0.30in machine gun on the commander's hatch for anti aircraft use.

The FV 603 Saracen was a six-wheeled armoured personnel carrier built by Alvis and used by the British army that became a recognisable vehicle as a result of its part in the policing of Northern Ireland.
Although removed from active service, it saw extensive use into the 1980's in Northern Ireland and was a familiar sight during "The Troubles".
As a member of the FV 600 series it shared the same chassis as the FV601 Saladin armoured car, the Salamander fire engine and to a slightly lesser extent the Stalwart High Mobility Load Carrier.

These included a 1972 Alvis Saracen Armoured Personnel Carrier Mark 6, a 1968 Alvis Saladin Armoured Car Mark 2, and a beautifully restored 1938 Morris-Commercial Quad, Limber and 25 Pounder.
We also visited Boxted Airfield in East Anglia, where again we were spoilt by another selection of rare vehicles, plus, as a bonus, there was an excellent flying display of a 1/6 scale B17 Bomber.
