Vickers was formed in Sheffield as a steel foundry by the steel manufacturer Edward Vickers and his father-in-law in 1828.
Vickers Sons and Maxim began work on a rigid airship for the British Admiralty in mid 1909 in Cavendish Dock, Cumbria, sadly it disintegrated upon its second trip out of a floating hangar on the evening of 23 September, 1911.
Vickers was a pioneer in producing airliners, early examples being converted from Vimy bombers, and went on to manufacture the piston-engined Vickers VC.1 Viking airliner and Varsity military crew trainer, the Viscount and Vanguard turboprop airliners, and the stylish though noisy VC-10 jet airliner, which remains in RAF service as an aerial refuelling tanker.

Alvis Vickers and the Equipment Support (Land) Business Unit sent a team of over 50 individuals out to theatre with all the extra equipment and the tanks were modified in the Gulf.

At DSEi, Alvis Vickers is showing the winner of the Future Command and Liaison Vehicle(FCLV) programme, the Alvis-Iveco Multipurpose Light Vehicle (MLV), a light armoured 4x4 vehicle, which is highly mobile and provides protection against mines and small arms fire.
Alvis Vickers is completing final contract negotiations for the supply of almost 500 vehicles to the British Army.
Managing Director of Alvis Vickers, Trevor Harrison, said the MLV selection for FCLV was "great news" for the company and a tribute to the expertise and hard work of the MLV team at Telford.

Development of the Simba, which is somewhat similar to the Saxon, began in 1980 as a complement to the Saxon.  The Simba was designed from the outset to be a versatile weapons platform fully capable of accom­modating a wide variety of weapons, including weapons up to 90 millimeters in caliber.
