Burial at Alyscamps became so desirable that bodies were shipped from all Europe for burial in its holy grounds.
Built in the mid 5th century by St. Hilaire and originally dedicated to St. Stephan, the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 11th century and the Great Portal was finished a century later in time for the coronation of Frederick I Barbarossa as King of Arles in 1178.
Rededicated to St. Trophime when the relics of his miracle were moved from the Alyscamps in 1152, the Cathedral failed to retain the sacred cache of its Saint’s miraculous status, probably because the Holy Stone, the sarcophagus lid with the knee print, had disappeared.

Today, after a railway was build through a part of the Alyscamps, the immediate surroundings are tarnished by ugly buildings and factories.

Les Alyscamps: This is slightly outside the centre of the city, across the Boulevard des Lices and down the Avenue des Alyscamps, but is easily walkable from the other monuments.
The word Alyscamps almost certainly comes from the Latin Elysii Campi (in modern French Champs- Elysées or in English Elysian Fields), that part of the Underworld to which departed heroes would retire.
It is a splendidly atmospheric avenue lined with marble tombs, all that remains of Arles' Roman necropolis.

Les Alyscamps (or 'L'Allée des Alyscamps') is a pair of paintings ("pendants") by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.
Painted in 1888 in Arles, France, it depicts autumnal scenes in the Alyscamps, an ancient Roman necropolis in Arles which is lined with poplars and stone sarcophagi.
The painting was last auctioned in November 2003, selling for $11,767,500 at an auction in New York despite predictions that it might fetch up to $18 million.

Later, when Arles became Christianized, a chapel (St. Jonorat's) was built and the area became a Christian cemetary.
