I would prefer the latter as its more historical (ie the problems in Japan and its breakup would allow those nations to reform or take back those provinces), but i know some people may not like it.

Note that each succestion is optional, (except Ashikaga), but its generally a good idea to go with it, ie the benifits will outway the downsides.
