Amal acknowledges this with wonder: "They were sincerely convinced that any man I married and had a child with would desert me forthwith, owing to circumstances that had nothing to do with me but belonged to the cycle of life whose meaning I was never able to discover.
The birth of Amal's son is followed almost immediately by the death of her great-grandmother, Sara, renown for her healing powers as well as the luminous beauty she retains, like her biblical namesake, well into old age.
The focus of Amal’s story is the matriarchal dynasty from which she is descended.

The decline of the united caliphate of the Umayyads and Abbasids, and the rise of local dynasties, formed the unsettling background to the next stage in the region’s history.
The anti-Syrian opposition bloc, led by the son of Rafik al-Hariri, Saad, in alliance with the Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, was pitched against the traditionally pro-Syrian Shia movements Amal and Hezbollah, as well as a coalition formed around the once anti-Syrian Maronite Christian Michel Aoun.
While Amal and Hezbollah dominated the south of Lebanon, the anti-Syrian opposition eventually won 72 out of the 128 seats in the Lebanese legislature, enabling it to form a government.

In the case of the Amal, repetitions are always associated with a direct blood relationship, although not in the restricted sense of grandfather to grandson proposed by Eckhardt.
Such is true of the known cases of Amalaric († 531), a son of Theodegotho and the Balth king Alaric II († 507), or Amalaberga, born from the first marriage of Amalafrida, a daughter of Theoderic the Great, and Amalafridas, a daughter of Amalaberga and Herminafrid, the Turingian king.
Another possible Amal is Odotheus, who crossed the Danube in 386 A.D. commanding a group of Greutungi (49); because of his name he could be a relative of Oduulf, a brother of Achiulf (50), perhaps his grandson.

They need this superhuman strength to combat the family curse; for four generations the weak and anaemic men left their women after they had given birth to a girl or an ailing son.

Cassiodorus: Chapter 2, Cassiodorus under Theoderic
Shortly after the marriage, between 516 and 518, the son Athalaric was born, extending the Amal line into its seventeenth generation (according to the genealogy preserved by Cassiodorus).
As events would have it, the fortunes of the dynasty were to be less happy than they seemed at this time, since Eutharic died before his father-in-law, and Athalaric only survived eight years ofœ hs regency, while his mother in her turn only lasted a few months before being murdered for her kingdom by Theodahad.
By this time the Gothic royal party owing allegiance to the Amals had thrown in its lot with the Byzantine forces, even to the point of renouncing Arianism, against the claims of their actual successors as kings of the Gothic people in Italy, the relatively uncultured Witigis and his successors, Ildibad, Eraric, and Totila.

A Gap in Puranic History Bridged by Pradip Bhattacharya
Despite the casual tossing away of Puranic accounts by Indologists prejudiced by western historicism, the fact remains that these texts provide a remarkably detailed account of dynasties of rulers along with a picture of social conditions that need to be included in any marshalling of facts relating to ancient India.
King Simuka Satavahana, named in inscriptions, is identical with Sishuka or Sindhuka of the Puranas, founder of the Andhra dynasty (that is how the Satavahanas are referred to in the Puranas).
K.D. Sethna (Amal Kiran) made a valiant effort to plug this gap in his Ancient India in a New Light.

Their analysis of the political situation in Lebanon in 1979 and 1980 convinced them that the country was ripe for achieving an Islamic revolution and that conditions were also favorable for eradicating Israel and recreating Palestine.
After Sadr's disappearance, Amal had fallen under the influence of secularized Shias who preferred the political integration of the Shia community within a pluralistic state and regarded the Iranian vision of Islamic revolution as inappropriate for Lebanon.

It is tempting to relate the destruction of stratum V to the invasion of Shishak and that of stratum IV to the Aramean wars, following the end of the Omride Dynasty, though an earlier date to this destruction should not be ruled out.
The Canaanite character of the material culture was maintained until the end of the Iron Age I, and thus it appears that the inhabitants were local Canaanites who enjoyed trade relations as far as Philistia.
The conflagration which destroyed parts of stratum V may be attributed to the conquest by Shishak, while the violent end of stratum IV and the abandonment of the lower city may be related to one of the events in the ninth century BCE, probably the Aramean wars after the end of the Omride Dynasty.

The most urgent question now is whether the Lebanese Shiite community, specifically the Amal and Hezbollah political movements, will back the Sunnis and the Christians in their call for Syria's ejection.
It remains unclear what the Lebanese Shia are going to do, but if one had to bet, the odds are decent that Amal and Hezbollah will not break from the Lebanese Christian and Sunni communities.
Lebanon has never been fully of the Arab world--it is historically, religiously, culturally, and geographically a special place--and the idea of a democratic Lebanon probably isn't nearly as scary to the Middle East's despots as is the idea of a democratic Iraq or Egypt.
