Amalienborg, the royal couple's winter residence, is a major architectural work and probably the most outstanding piece of Rococo architecture in Denmark.
Amalienborg comprises four externally uniform (but internally different) palaces encircling an octagonal courtyard, in the middle of which has been erected an equestrian statue of Frederik V – the founder of the Amalienborg Palace complex and the Frederiksstad.
Amalienborg was originally conceived as town mansions for families of the nobility at the beginning of the 1750s.

The Amalienborg complex consists of four palaces, planned around an octagonal courtyard, in the centre of which stands the French sculptor J.F.J. Saly’s equestrian statue of Frederik V, the founder of Amalienborg Palace and Frederiksstaden, the surrounding district of Copenhagen.
The complex was constructed by Frederik V on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the coronation of Christian I, the first King of the House of Oldenborg.
Amalienborg became the royal residence after the fire of Christiansborg Palace, which burnt down in the night between 26 and 27 February 1794.

Amalienborg was originally built for four noble families; however, when Christiansborg Castle burnt down on February 26, 1794, the royal family bought the palaces and moved in.
Amalienborg is the centerpiece of Frederiksstad, a district that was built by King Frederik V to commemorate in 1748 the tercentenary of the Oldenburg family's ascent to the throne of Denmark, and in 1749 the tercentenary of the coronation of Christian I of Denmark.
According to Eigtved’s master plans for Frederikstad and the Amalienborg Palaces, the four palaces surrounding the plaza were conceived of as town mansions for the families of chosen nobility.
