Amaltheia - FFXIclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
In Greek mythology, Amaltheia was a divine goat that provided milk and honey for an infant Zeus (god of weather, ruler of the Olympian gods) on Mount Aigaion on the island of Crete.
Amaltheia's horn was broken off and it became Cornucopia ("horn of plenty"), which would always be filled with food no matter how much was taken from it.
Amaltheia is occasionally interpreted as a nymph accompanied by a goat.

She is sometimes represented as the goat which suckled the infant-god in a cave in Crete, sometimes as a nymph of uncertain parentage (daughter of Oceanus, Haemonius, Olen, Melisseus), who brought him up on the' milk of a goat.
Amaltheia gave it to Achelbus (her reputed brother), who exchanged it for his own horn which had been broken off in his contest with Heracles for the possession of Deianeira.
Speaking generally, it was regarded as the symbol of inexhaustible riches and plenty, and became the attribute of various divinities (Hades, Gaea, Demeter, Cybele, Hermes), and of rivers (the Nile) as fertilizers of the land.

 HERAKLES’ FURTHER ADVENTURES: KALYDON
Amaltheia was the goat who nursed the baby Zeus; ambrosia flowed from one of its horns and nectar from the other.
The horn of Amaltheia, which is exchanged for the horn of Acheloos, would then have the same meaning but with an added nuance: it represents the inexhaustible and unfailing sexual potency Herakles needs before marrying the Amazon-like huntress Deianeira.
The horn of Amaltheia, which provides unending nourishment, is an antidote to these poisoned, missing, and rejecting breasts, and the horn of Acheloos, which becomes the horn of Amaltheia (or is exchanged for it), is the right horn, like the Amazons’ missing right breast or the poisoned right breast of Hera.
