Weir's parents are graduates of Central College in Pella, Iowa, were they competed in Track (Julie) and Basketball (Jim).
Weir holds many of the sprint freestyle age group records for USA Swimming, setting her first record at age 12, in the 50 yard freestyle in 23.15 seconds.
Weir became a freshman at the University of Georgia in 2004, where her team dominated the 2005 NCAA championships, with Weir anchoring four of the unprecedented five UGA winning relays.

Lacey Nymeyer (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson Ford), who swam with Weir on the bronze medal-winning 400m free relay in Montreal, was second in 55.79, while Andrea Hupman (Atlanta/Swim Atlanta) was third in 56.02.
The win was Weir's first national title and just one-hundredth of a second off her lifetime best.
