Topic: Amanitaceae

In the News (Fri 17 May 13)

  Amanitaceae (Amanita Family)
The quandary of Amanitaceae: Certainly one of the most prolific families on the coast, easy to find and generically identify, yet very difficult to correctly discern species; with some of the most superb tasting mushrooms known, and some so poisonous only an immediate emergency liver transplant can save your life.
Amanitaceae is one of the most fascinating and beautiful families - much pleasure is to be derived simply from observing and learning; leave the gastronomic decisions to those properly trained.
Cap: From round ball to convex to planar with age, 5 to 40 cm (2 to 16 inches) broad.

In the modern sense, the boletes are placed in their own order, the Boletales.
Amanitaceae: basidiospores white; gills free or finely attached; gill trama divergent.
Observe the basidiocarps and note the nearly free gill attachment and presence of veils leaving an annulus (remnant of the partial veil) and a volva and/or patches (remnants of the universal veil).

 Naming of Fungi
Amanita muscaria as mentioned above and Amanita australis, which is a yellow form of Amanita muscaria, are grouped with the Amanitaceae family.
Thus Amanitaceae belong to the order Agaricales along with the Family Agaricaceae which, is the family which, the common edible mushroom Agaricus campestris belongs to.
Once again orders are then grouped in to Subclasses or Class, which end in either mycetidae, or mycetes for the latter.

 Amanitales Gallery
The order Amanitales contains just one family, the Amanitaceae, comprising two genera, Amanita and Limacella.
The Amanita genus is well know for such prized edibles as Caesar's mushroom (Amanita caesarea), as well as for several deadly poisonous species (Amanita phalloides and Amanita pantherina, for example).
This group also contains Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the Fly Agaric, one of the most beautiful of all the gilled fungi.

 project summary
(1990) provided data on the fruiting periods and ecological associations [i.e., with respect to certain species of trees and/or different forest types] of macrofungi belonging to five families (Agaricaceae, Amanitaceae, Hygrophoraceae, Pluteaceae, and Tricholomataceae); many of the fungi included in this study are species known to be ectomycorrhizal.
1990; Bhatt et al., in press) has been directed toward the families of basidiomycetes (e.g., Amanitaceae, Boletaceae, Cantharellaceae, and Russulaceae) to be considered in the proposed project.
The two primary study sites are considered especially appropriate for elucidating relationships between ectomycorrhizal fungi and their associated trees because species richness of all ectomycorrhiza-forming trees is relatively low while the level of dominance of a particular species is usually high.

taxa of the Amanitaceae are known to be present or are possibly or probably present (including taxa known from surrounding areas in, or close to, the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia); and surely there is more than one taxon belonging to Limacella in the park.
RET's 2004 and 2006 collecting in the Park were largely supported by the Biology Department of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, based on a National Science Foundation grant.

This page and subordinate pages provide data on species of the macrofungal, largely ectomycorrhizal genus Amanita (Amanitaceae, Agaricales, Basidiomycetes, Fungi) supplemented by monotone or color illustrations of the fungi wherever possible.
This is likely always to be a work in progress.
