Announcing the scheme at Amarkantak recently, Babulal Gaur, state Minister for Urban Administration and Development announced the immediate sanction of Rs 10 lakh for drainage system and other construction works at Amarkantak.
The minister said that a 20-bed hospital and a gas agency would be established as part of the project to develop Amarkantak.
Amarkantak would also be developed as a tourist centre.

Amarkantak is actually quite small, the Sarvodaya Hotel, where I stayed first is sort of in the center, the marketplace, not far away from the Narmadeshvari temple, which contains the source of the Narmada river.
We arrived at 4 o’clock in the night, completely tired, the place was crowded with people as it was election day, full moon, and the fair of the Narmada river, when people bathed in its source.

The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet, which met at Maheshwar today deviating from the normal practice of meeting at the State Secretariat in Bhopal, has decided to declare Maheshwar and Amarkantak as holy cities, where selling of eggs, fish and meat would be prohibited.
The State Cabinet has directed different Government departments to take initiative in 17 specific areas as well as given instructions to prepare a Master Plan for these cities.
While ordering a complete ban on consumption of eggs, meat and fish at Maheshwar and Amarkantak, the Cabinet has also given clear instructions to ensure complete check on cruelty against animals and birds.
