Film stock   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Film stocks are specific types of photographic film used to shoot, copy, or print a movie.
Film is also classified according to its width and the arrangement of its sprocket holes--a range of gauges from 8mm to 70mm or more, single-perf or double-perf configurations.
Motion picture film is known to be a highly unstable medium: improperly preserved film can deteriorate in a period of time much faster than many photographs or other visual presentations.

One hundred Years of Film Sizes. Almost one hundred film widths and perforations were experimented with.
Whereas film equipment has undergone drastic changes in the course of a century it is a little miracle that 35mm has remained the universally accepted film size.
Amateur film was usually cut from 35 mm professional raw stock, that was produced in large quantities and therefore economical to buy.
An optimum use of the film width was obtained by expanding the image and reducing the size of the perforations on both sides.

Exhibition - Moving Images / Amateur Film
In the early years of cinema it was hard to distinguish amateur from professional films, as the first film-makers began with films made in private.
The introduction of Super-8 film in 1963 and the Super-8 sound film cartridge in 1973 created ideal conditions for home movies, but the new technology of magnetic film recording on video cassettes introduced in the 1980s soon conquered the global market and heralded the swift end of conventional amateur filmmaking.
It was over 100 years ago that the medium of film first put moving people on screen; the 20th century was the era of film, and this new exhibition shows the technology of the age.

 Film vs. Digital
Film has already disappeared from professional newspaper use a year or so ago, although small town papers may still use it, and likewise, no digital capture system has come anywhere near replacing 8x10" large format film for huge exhibition prints that need to be hellaciously detailed.
These typical comparisons of course put the film at a huge disadvantage since they are eliminating all of film's advantages and reducing the comparison to the trivial resolution issues the newbies argue about.

As with all of Hartley's films, this one has a somewhat mesmerizing effect, which he exacts with a unique style of presenting his story that has to do with the look and feel of the film, the deliberate pace he establishes, and most especially the manner in which his actors deliver their lines.
And though this particular film is not, perhaps, one of Hartley's best, it is still pure Hartley, with aspects that are certainly engaging and memorable, beginning with his main character, Isabelle.
Donovan, a veteran of many of Hartley's films, is very effective here also, with a very pensive, understated performance that clearly indicates an honest sense of this man's bewilderment, as does the very real caution with which he approaches his situation as he attempts to reorient himself and get on with his life.

Certainly for Isabelle (Huppert), an ex-nun and would-be pornographer, who lets him recuperate in her apartment, the latter seems to be true, particularly when a porn star (Löwensohn), a crazed accountant and two hitmen begin to intrude on their lives.
A delightfully stylish and skewed picture of sex, violence and love in contemporary America, the film wears its more serious concerns (guilt, responsibility, exploitation, redemption) admirably lightly.
Huppert is especially good, conjuring up a canny blend of hilarious melancholy and unexpected eroticism which, incidentally, provides the film-maker with his most poignant portrait yet of an ill-starred love affair.
