The field of amateur telescope making is considered an offshoot of the amateur astronomy community.
They build their telescopes for the enjoyment of the hobby, or so they can make a personal contribution to the field of astronomy.
Since the Newtonian Reflector is the most common telescope built by amateur telescope makers, large sections of the literature on the subject is devoted to fabrication of the primary mirror.

These 'global' resources for ATM are widely used, and easily accessed; and those who feel that telescope making is on the decline surely feel that way in spite of this massive documentation.
A Portland-based ATM had plate glass cut into two discs and a quantity of small rectangles, and used the kiln to fuse them into a cellular mirror blank, which was slumped to the correct radius of curvature.
It could be noted that the ATM tradition at the Riverside Telescope Maker's Conference was revived in recent years, almost singlehandedly, by a Seattle amateur who drives 2400 miles round trip with the mirror blanks and buckets of grit.

 Amateur Telescope Making (ATM)
The telescope is a 14" f/5 truss tube dobson scope.
The mirror box is the lower part of the scope, to which are attached the trusses, the mirror frame containing the primary, and the "oversized" altitude bearings (also not shown).
The secret of a good functioning floating mirror cell is also the most tricky part of the constructional design: in order to collimate your telescope, you have to be able to tweak at the 'collimation bolts', and by doing so, all the cupport points at the primary's back surface have to stay in level.

After having paused with amateur astronomy for 15 years, the clear and dark sky in the spanish suburb of La Coruña where I live, inspired me 1995 to take up my hobby again.
As side bearings, I used two 18 cm PVC rings that alternately ride on ball bearings or teflon pads, depending on whether I want to use the telescope manually or guided by computer (at the moment I have not yet implemented the computer drive).
