Amati is the name of a family of Italian violin-makers, who flourished at Cremona from about 1550 to 1740.
Nicolo Amati (December 3, 1596 – April 12, 1684) was the son of Girolamo Amati.
He improved the model adopted by the rest of the Amatis and produced instruments capable of yielding greater power of tone.

Niccolo Amati (1596 - 1684) was an Italian violin-maker in Cremona.
The founder of the Cremona school was Andrea Amati (c.1520–c.1578), whose earliest violins date from c.1564.
His sons were Antonio Amati and Girolamo or Geronimo Amati, who worked together and followed closely their father’s patterns in making violins of graceful shape and sweet tone.

Three string quartets bearing the name Amati have been based in Canada: Two separate Amati string quartets have performed on 17th-century instruments built by the Amati family of Italy, and owned by the University of Saskatchewan; and a third unrelated Amati String Quartet was based in Toronto, 1985-2000.
This first Amati String Quartet was founded in 1968 by Murray Adaskin and three other faculty members of the University of Saskatchewan: Norma Lee Bisha, second violin, Michael Bowie, viola, and Edward Bisha, cello.
The instruments are the only set in Canada built by the Amati family of Cremona - one violin in 1627, another violin in 1637, the viola in 1607, and the cello in 1690.
