The film suffers from a lack of focus at times, while the ending leaves us wishing for something more, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that all of this wasn't, in some weird way, entertaining.
But, like many relationships, this one cannot hope to last, and throughout the film, despite the happiness we feel for their bond, there is a sense of dread that hangs over the two that is hard to ignore.
The real gem of the film is its examination of family relationships, most notably that of Thomas's mother and grandmother, who spends her days in bed, nagging her daughter and cursing her pains.

However, even as her own personal prejudices and opinions are an integral part of the film’s ability to be engaging, they also hamper the flow of the film and risk losing the sympathy of the audience.
The film also would have been more cohesive if her focus on ethnicity were either a tiny bit broader or a tad narrower.

And as Denver, the deceptively young Elise gives what may be the film's most skilled, understated performance as a bright, spirited teenager slowly being eroded by the fears and dependencies imposed upon her by her mother.
The characters in the film, much like those in a Rodchenko photograph, are always either watching or being watched.
The film is unique and challenging in its presentation of flashbacks and the supernatural and, while nothing in "Beloved" quite matches the psychotic energy of "Something Wild" (still Demme's best film), Demme's uncompromising attitude toward character and tone keeps things tough, honest and surprisingly dark almost until the very end.

I was well into the writing stage on September 11, 2001, after which “Amazing Grace” became the song that people turned to most often to express their faith, hope, and solidarity.
The most spine-chilling “Amazing Grace” moment for me came not during the events of September 11, but on one Sunday when I was with my sixteen-year-old son at All Souls Church in London’s West End.
A few weeks later I was in that vicarage, standing in the small room where Newton first put grace next to amazing in the words of a song that touched on the peaks and troughs of his life.
