Amazonas is the largest state of Brazil, located in the northern part of the country.
The name "Amazonas" was given to the Amazon River by early Spanish explorers, who fought skirmishes with female Amerindian warriors that they named after the fierce mounted female warriors in Greek mythology.
What is today Amazonas state was first taken control of after the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas, which essentially divided the planet (excluding, of course, Europe) between the Spanish and the Portuguese, territories west of (approximately) 46° 37' W beloning to Spain, those east of that latitude, to Portugal.

So the way it works is, if you fall off the little bridge, the lotus's thorns scratch you, pirañas smell the blood, come over and eat you up before you can get out.
Besides we were told that the zoo is in rather poor condition and is going to be shut down before too long, the only thing to see there is the giant anaconda.
We were never asked for it, but the situation may have changed after the recent outbreak.

Saúl Márquez Tovar, an indigenous Uitoto leader from Colombia’s Amazonas department and president of the Zonal Indigenous Association of Arica, disappeared on January 6 in the Colombian city of Leticia, which is the capital of Amazonas department and borders on Peru and Brazil.
On January 7 Márquez’s body was found in the Brazilian town of Tabatinga; his tongue had been removed, his teeth and fingernails were pulled out and he had five bullet wounds.
Meanwhile, some 400 Embera Katío people from the Sinú and Verde rivers region of Córdoba department remain camped out in a permanent assembly in front of the Bogotá offices of the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC), demanding that the government negotiate solutions to the problems in their communities caused by the Urrá dam.

 Birding (safely) in Colombia: the Amazonas and Los Llanos
Birding in the Amazon of Colombia can be quite interesting.
There are small minibuses that pass along the airport and can bring you to side roads at km 6, 7, 10.
In the second growth along the road there was: Yellow-crested Tanager (Tachyphonus rufiventer), a species not found in Colombia!, Grey-capped Flycatcher (Myiozetetes granadensis), Masked Crimson Tanager (Ramphocelus nigrogularis) (common along road) and Opal-crowned Tanager (Tangara callophrys).
