The problem of pollution in Ambalappuzha Kappithode, a canal which flows by the side of the Ambalappuzha flyover, continues unabated despite the promise made by the authorities to clean it up.
The pollution is mainly owing to solid and liquid wastes being deposited in the canal from peeling sheds in Ambalappuzha.
Two students of Ambalappuzha Government Lower Primary School situated by the side of the canal fell unconscious after inhaling poisonous gases that emanated from the canal.

The four hundred-year-old race commemmorates the occasion when a Hindu idol was worshipped in a Christian home before being taken to the temple where it is permanently placed.
Legend says that the idol of Sri Krishna that is now in the great temple at Ambalappuzha was stolen by the men of the then king of "Chempakasserry" from a temple at Kurichi, twenty miles to the north-east across the swampy countryside.
After ceremonial poojas at the Christian house, the idol was taken to the Bhagavathi temple from where it was later transported to Ambalappuzha in a grand procession accompanied by the warships of the day.
