This Palace was the perfect setting for the Amber Room, once described as the "eight wonder of the world." Six tons of solid amber, backed in gold leaf filled a room in the palace.
The room filled approximately 28 crates, and was removed from the Catherine Palace.
Today, craftsmen are hard at work in the Palace, and hope to have a complete reconstruction of the room ready in April, 2003, in time for celebrations of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburgh.
