Ambient music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ambient music is a loosely defined musical genre that incorporates elements of a number of different styles - including jazz, electronic music, new age, rock and roll, modern classical music, reggae, traditional, world and even noise.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s ambient music underwent a resurgence with the reconciliation of rhythm with the dreamy, meandering reverb of the first (late 1970s - 1980s) wave of ambient music.
Under the guise of various styles, ambient electronic music (sometimes referred to as ambient techno or ambient dub) saw the birth of a new wave of electronic music in the works of artists like The Orb, Aphex Twin and the Irresistible Force.

Dub derives its name from the practice of dubbing instrumental, rhythm-oriented versions of reggae songs onto the B-sides of 45 rpm singles, which evolved into a legitimate and accepted style of its own as those re-recordings became forums for engineers to experiment with the possibilities of their mixing consoles.
Ambient took the opposite direction, slowing the beats down and relying on watery electronic textures-it was used as come-down music, when ravers and club-goers needed a break from acid house and hardcore techno.

Today's ambient music, usually referred to as "New Ambient" or "Ambient Dub," means full of rhythms, for dance or trance, body movement or mind relaxation mode, and often sounds floaty or "groovy," with drop-out beats, tribal treats, ethno-primitive, textural and/or cyber-phonic music.
Ambient music grew into its own genre out of the "chill-out" rooms that became a part of the rave scene, a place to escape the pounding, throbbing techno beats (often in excess of 160-180beats per minute!), where DJ's mixed together nature sounds, New Age music tracks, and tape loops or other sound samples.

MAILING LIST MISSION AND CONTENT____________________________________ The AMBIENT MUSIC Mailing List, formed August 1994, is intended for information and discussion pertaining to all forms of ambient music, from Brian Eno's Ambient series to environmental sound effects recordings, from The Orb's ambient dub to Jim O'Rourke's ambient industrial drones.
Originally conceptualized by Eno as 'sonic wallpaper', the word ambient as a musical term has come in recent years to embrace a very diverse range of artists and influences.
If, however, the ambient music content within a discussion becomes null and the debate deteriorates into purely personal jabs and defenses, both parties run the risk of unceremonious removal from the list and/or some creatively worded requests to "shut up" coming in private email from other listmembers.
