  summary thesis
The image appears to have a double sense, appears to be ambiguous - the sense of the image is a double-sense.
Because the 'Nothing' that appears in and with and through the image is, according to Sartre, an unambiguous reference to an essential and structural quality of consciousness: to be a negation, freedom and 'nihilation' of, and distance to, the absurd some-thing, the en-soi that is the world of the things.
It is revealed in the modesty of his approach of the image, an approach that again and again leads him to re-thinking the image, as well as in the importance he assigns to the image as a 'basic shape' of consciousness and a central element of the phenomenological method ('eidetic variation').

 The ambiguity in image perception
The image as a pictorial representation belongs to the external knowledge representations' group along with the linguistic (verbal) representations.
The difference between the image perception and mental images is, that images of ambiguous figures are usually reinterpreted only in the one way.
The image scaling, size constancy and depth are the processes caused by the fact that the surrounding world is three-dimensional, while the retina of the eye is a two-dimensional plane.

When you click on the image, the screen asks you 'What's this?' When you click the screen again, the 13 is situated between a 12 and a 14, prompting the perception of the object as a thirteen.

But the image presented is a grainy close-up, distorting the image and rendering the billboard familiar yet indistinct.
Although the image has been sourced from film, the style and the format of the billboard are equally suggestive of the visual language of advertising.
And with a Physics Room exhibition in 2003, Boelee presents the third part of The Ambiguous Image - her dissatisfaction_, reworking the billboard and expanding the debate around living in Christchurch as an artist.

An image, even if photographic, might provoke such a sensation; but this would be the aura of the image, not that of the object represented.
The image oscillates from a readily perceived receding view (a deep corridor extending into the picture plane) to a less pronounced projecting view, ultimately collapsing into a two-dimensional rectangle comprised of four triangles.
Its images were of geometric, man-made objects combined with abstract microscopic and aerial views of nature, “new vision” views unavailable to the unaided eye.

In our approach, each image is represented by a high-dimensional signature in the feature space, and a principal component analysis is performed for every feature to reduce dimensionality.
Image database overview is computed in challenging conditions since clusters are overlapping with outliers and the number of clusters is unknown.
The results on image databases are discussed and compared with other clustering methods in §4, §5 summarizes our concluding remarks.

The classic ambiguous image is the bird/rabbit figure shown to the left, often found in psychology text-books - its a bird facing right, but a rabbit facing left.
The ambiguous face in comic book picture 1 is more complicated because the objects comprising it are distributed in depth within the scene.
It's an image from tens of thousands of years ago, in which the painted details added to a cave wall conjure up a bison, but only if the light from a lamp strikes the rock so that its contours appear in relief, as the bison's spine.

The Devouring Woman and Her Serpentine Hair in Late-Pre-Raphaelitism
Rossetti accompanied this image with a textual commentary provided by Sonnet LXXVIII of "The House of Life," entitled "Body's Beauty." The poem emphasizes the menacing propensity of Lady Lilith's beauty, making an image which before remained a powerful tribute and embodiment of feminine beauty into an equal acknowledgement of the sinister capacity of her seduction.
Hunt reinforces this ambiguity by the iconography of the painting: twisting and spiraling serpentine columns support the loom, and the devouring aspect of the threads seems emphasized by the icon of the self-destroying sphinx at the foot of the table in the lower right.
This medusan role reversal turns the illustration from an image of castration to one of a phallic power that transfixes its subject, almost evoking the frightened and withdrawn response of the girlish Mary in Rossetti's earlier "Ecce Ancilla Domini" (1850).

These images are considered to be the opposite of tyranny (that is to say of heavy conditioning, of cultural dictatorship) the opposite of noise (meaning an indistinct and inflated word, without any importance) the opposite of hate (of hostile closure towards others) and the opposite of isolation (that is separation from others).
However, that ambiguity towards the mobile phone can also be attributed to the anti-social attack that has been unleashed within space of public communication.

Now go over your entire image and it gives it a "painterly" feel which can really add a dimension of feeling to the image.
