Ambition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
For a game to be a mind sport, it is necessary that the game be predominantly one of skill and strategy.
Iterated, the game becomes one of skill; it would remain a game of chance against a player who selects each strategy with uniform probability (the "optimal" strategy) but real humans are terrible random-output generators, and a skilled RPS player exploits this fact.
An even graver threat to the game's long-term health is that it unabashedly favors the wealthy, snubbing the time-honored belief, held by some, that games occur in a "magic circle" where players, under the "law", are equal.

Facts about ambition card game   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Ambition is a trick-taking game developed by Mike Church, a 20-year-old math student, in September 2003, in Budapest, Hungary.
Ambition is a point-trick game ("point-trick" refers to a species of trick-taking game where point values assigned to certain cards, instead of the number of tricks taken, are used for scoring; Hearts and Pinochle are point-trick games, Spades is not) wherein, each round, a player's goal is to score the second highest number of points.
The game's popularity grew at a steady and surprising pace, spreading outward from Church and his playtesters-- by the end of 2003 there were an estimated 300-600 people familiar with the game, and several describe it as "addictive".

 Ambition: The Official Blog
Ambition will be launched online, with high probability, this fall.
Now is the best time to change Ambition's rules, if doing so can improve the game, because less than 0.1% of those who will eventually play Ambition already have played it, much less heard of it.
While three- and four-round games are unsatisfying (hence, my desire to alter the ending condition) I find it unlikely that anyone will complain that an 11-round game was too short.

Ambition can be found on the Card Games site, but those aren't the latest rules (the game's new, invented in 2003 and probably still a bit of a work-in-progress).
The game also has a blog, where I guess the final rules will appear one day (Church says at the Cardschat he's working on a final rules document).
Players need to work for different goals depending on their cards and also keep an eye on the other players so they don't end up getting most points (using chips or other visible tokens to count points during hands is probably mandatory).

The games reflect the period's attitudes toward religion and morality, wealth and success, technology and progress, and education and occultism.
Early games, such as The Game of Dr. Busby (1843), tended to be small and were produced by hand-coloring a monochrome print, a time-consuming and expensive process.
Although the arrival of radio and television in American homes dampened the games industry as the 20th century unfolded, board games remained a staple of wholesome family fun and "edu-tainment." In times of crisis, Americans have found relief in the distraction and companionship of board game pursuits.

Gambling Guide > Cards > Card Games > Trick-Taking Games
Trick-taking games are card games in which play is divided into multiple rounds called tricks, during which each player plays one card from his hand, and the rules of the game determine which player wins that trick based on the cards played.
The object of such games varies; it is often to win the most tricks, but it may instead be to avoid winning tricks, to win exactly a certain number of tricks, or to acquire (or not acquire) certain cards.
Another feature common to many games is the concept of trump (from the French triomphe, although the idea probably originated in Italy), in which special cards (sometimes all the cards of a certain suit) are designated to outrank all other cards played.

So with my own game in mind, i wondered if I could come up with a card game that was unique, was simple enough to be easily learned, and yet was still not too childish that people who are into gambling wouldn't want to play.
Of course, the cards you landed as an addition to the draw were put back into the full-deck, you didn't keep them, because that would mean the first one to have the higher "hand" would be unbeatable by anyone else.
