AMBLYGONITE (Lithium Sodium Aluminum Phosphate Fluoride Hydroxide)
Amblygonite, as it turns out, is easily confused for other host rock members such as quartz and albite.
The general appearance of amblygonite does resemble these two minerals especially the albite but it can be differentiated with a flame test for lithium, density and by its unusual cleavage.
Amblygonite also forms a solid solution series with the often associated mineral montebrasite and differs from amblygonite by being richer in hydroxide instead of fluorine.

amblygonite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Amblygonite is a mineral usually found as cleavable or columnar, and compact masses; it is translucent and has a vitreous lustre, and the colour varies from white to pale shades of violet, grey, green or yellow.
Amblygonite occurs with lepidolite, tourmaline, and other lithia-bearing minerals in pegmatite veins.
It contains about 10% of lithia, and, since 1886, has been utilized as a source of lithium salts, the chief commercial sources being the Montebras deposits, and later the Californian.
