Marine iguana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is a species of iguana that has the unique ability among modern lizards to live and forage in the sea.
In fact, Amblyrhynchus cristatus is not always fl; the young have a lighter coloured dorsal stripe, and some adult specimens are grey.
The reason for the sombre tones is that the species must rapidly absorb heat to minimize the period of lethargy after emerging from the water.

 Galapagos Marine Iguana
Perhaps no member of the Galapagos fauna has met with as much revulsion by historic visitors as the marine iguana, Amblyrhynchus cristatus.
The genus name of the marine iguana, Amblyrhynchus, (amblys = short, rhynchos = nose) is derived from the characteristically blunt snout, which allows them to more efficiently scrape algae off of the rocks with their razor sharp, three-cusped teeth.
During the course of their feeding, marine iguanas ingest large amounts of salt water.

 Biogeography of Marine Iguana
The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an endemic species to the Galapagos Islands, an archipelago of approximately 25,000 square miles located 600 to 700 miles west of Ecuador in equatorial waters (Carpenter 1966).
The Galapagos iguanas, the land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus and Conolophus pallidus) and the marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), are theorized to have diverged between fifteen and twenty million years ago (Wyles and Sarich 1983).
This divergence of species predates the age of the Galapagos Islands, indeed these islands were created by hot spots, approximately 5 million years ago, and have never had contact with the South American continent.
