Amboy Crater - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amboy Crater and Lava Field is an extinct North American cinder cone.
This cinder cone type crater is estimated to be around 10,000 years old and was formed in layers of mostly vesicular pahoehoe - possibly in the Holocene geological period.
Other than a stretch of US 66 through New Mexico, Amboy Crater was the only extinct volcanic area along the entire route and generations of Route 66 travelers from the 1920s through the 1960s could honestly boast that they had climbed a real volcano.

 Amboy Crater, 29 Palms, CA
The crater is mostly fl in color and reaches a height of 246 feet at its top and 1508 feet around its base.
The Amboy Crater is called a cinder cone because it is composed entirely of lava build-up and igneous rock spewed out during volcanic eruptions - some of these eruptions being so violent as to hurl huge red-hot boulders, called bombs, hundreds of yards from the crater.
These days the Amboy Crater is on a kind of seismic short list of those dormant volcanoes along Western North America now being watched for signs of new volcanic activity.

Amboy Crater, located out with the old-time diners and abandoned gas stations along historic old Route 66, has long been a curiosity for generations of desert travelers.
Amboy Crater and environs are covered with two kinds of lava: aa(pronounced ah-ah), sharp, hiking boot assaulting hunks of basalt and pahoehoe (pa-hoy-hoy), smoother, rope-like lava.
