Ambrose Barlow was one of several Benedictine priests who grace the long list of the English Catholic martyrs of the Reformation.
Barlow replied that the law had referred to "Jesuits and seminary priests", and he was a Benedictine.
Father Ambrose Barlow was proclaimed a saint by Pope Paul VI in 1970.

BLESSED AMBROSE BARLOW, O.S.B. Blessed Ambrose Barlow was born at Barlow Hall Manchester, in November, 1585, and baptised at Didsbury Parish Church.
Father Ambrose gave himself up, the people were allowed to go free after their names had been taken, and he was taken to the Justice of the Peace at Winwick, and thence to Lancaster Castle.
Blessed Ambrose stoutly defended his faith, and the next day, the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, he was found guilty, and sentenced in the usual form.

His father, Ambrose Barlow was born in Culpepper Co Virginia in 1766, and married Miss Ann Smith, a daughter of John Smith, of Virginia.
Smith Barlow recieved a good school training in early life, and for a few years was engaged in teaching, but developing a more than ordinary ability for the affairs of public life, he purchased, in 1826; one-half of the sheriffship of the county of Monroe.
Barlow was thrice nominated for the speakership of the House, and twice nominated in the Senate for lieutenant-governor of the State.

The most likely story is that the skull belonged to Ambrose Barlow, who was the son of Sir Alexander Barlow, of nearby Barlow Hall.
Ambrose Barlow was a Roman Catholic priest, who was hanged and quartered at the age of 51, on 10th September, 1641, for his religious beliefs.
Father Ambrose has been celebrating Mass at Morely Hall on 25th April, 1641, when he was attacked and captured by a mob of 400 fanatical Protestants, led by the Puritan Minister of Leigh.

He was the fourth son of Sir Alexander Barlow, Knight of Barlow Hall, near Manchester, by Mary, daughter of Sir Uryan Brereton, Knight of Handforth Hall, Co. Chester, and was baptized at Didsbury Church 30 November, 1585; the entry in the register may still be seen.
A beautiful picture of his life is given by Challoner from two manuscript relations belonging to St. Gregory's monastery, one written by his brother Dom Rudesind Barlow, President of the Anglo­Benedictine Congregation.
There is another manuscript, entitled "The Apostolical Life of Ambrose Barlow", written by one of his pupils for Dom Rudesind, which is at present in the Library of Owen's College, Manchester.

GURLEY A. Gurley Ambrose Barlow Jr., of 18171 Havlow Lane, died Dec. 13, 1995, in Obici Hospital.
He was a native of Isle of Wight County and a lifelong member of Smithfield Baptist Church where he sang for many years in the choir, served as deacon and on the finance committee, and at the time of his death, was trustee.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Haverty Barlow; daughter, Barbara Barlow Bucknall of Deep River, Conn.; brother, Joseph Augustus Barlow of Smithfield; and four nieces.

Now pupils from St Ambrose Barlow RC and the Swinton High School, in Salford, and St Peter's RC High School, in Manchester, are looking at ways to transform the story into a drama with experts from the city's Royal Exchange Theatre.
