In the 1829 election Ambrose Hundley Sevier stood for reelection and was opposed by the veteran Crittenden supporter, Richard Searcy.
On Sept. 4, 1827 Ambrose Sevier and Thomas Newton journeyed to Indian Territory where they fought a bloodless duel.
Crittenden set him to a higher task, that of fracturing the political relations between Pope, Sevier, Woodruff, Fulton and President Jackson.

In December 1848 President James K. Polk named Ambrose Sevier as the United States commissioner, but Sevier died before he could be confirmed by the Senate.
John B. Weller replaced Sevier and ran the portion of the line from the Pacific Ocean to the junction of the Gila and Colorado rivers but departed sometime after February 15, 1850, the victim of political intrigues and infighting.
These problems did not become immediately apparent, in part because of the difficulties of the United States in settling on a commissioner.

In 1824, Thomas Johnston, represented by Ambrose H. Sevier, filed suit against James Ball, John Williams and William Blalock in the Superior Court.
Johnston alleged that they had given him a note promising to pay $230.62 1/2 worth of peltry, beef hides and beaver furs by April 1823.
The Court ordered costs to be paid as well, although it declared a credit of $187.25, without stating any reasons.

In the spring of 1777 the legislature of North Carolina met, and Sevier was again a representative from Watauga, and procured for the settlement the establishment of courts and the extension of state laws.
After this Sevier earnestly opposed the scheme of a separate government, and advised all his compatriots to take no further steps toward it; but public opinion was strongly against a return to North Carolina, and he finally consented to accept the governorship of the new state, taking the oath of office on 1 March, 1785.
He was clerk of the territorial legislature and a member of that body, in 1823-'5, a delegate to congress in 1827-'36, haying been chosen as a Democrat, and United States senator from the latter year till 1848.
