Giffen recounted a few elements of the Ambush Bug madness from that era, such as the time assistant editor Andy Helfer had to go into Julie Schwartz's office and explain to one of the grand old men of DC Comics why Giffen's script set in the Vietnamese province of Poontang couldn't be published as-was.

Ambush Bug first appeared in 1982 and continues to pop up in DC comics to this day; even his cameo shots have been good for a chuckle.
Writers should try to reatin Ambush Bug's tendencies to break through the "fourth wall" and comment on the action as if he were a critic of the show, a member of the audience, or even a writer or director.
Ambush Bug should have a sort of logic to his behaviors and a reason for disrupting scenes, even if it is simply the logic followed by the insane; having him pop up out of nowhere with no apparent motivation will only make him a irritating complication to the storyline.

Ambush Bug is a fictional comic book character who has appeared in several DC Comics.
His origin is disputed, although the most commonly accepted origin is that Brum-El (a historical allusion to Beau Brummel[citation needed]) of the planet Schwab sent his clothes from his supposedly doomed planet, hoping that his wardrobe would survive, only to have it intercepted by a giant radioactive space spider.
In the resulting crash, only two articles of clothing survived: the Ambush Bug suit, which was subsequently found by Irwin Schwab, and Argh!Yle!, an argyle sock with a Dr. Doom-like complex, complete with metal mask.
